New Trachy Change & Clean UP

Luke is having a new type of Trachy tube fitted. This one will hopefully be more flexible and provide better air flow to the Lung.

Medical Terminology

PICU - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

STOMA BAG - Works in a similar way to a small hoover bag in that the bags hole goes over where the gut sticks out to catch the contents processed by the bowel thus bypassing the rectum.

TPN - Total Prenatal Nutrition, a form of feed substitute given intravenously that provides all a baby needs to live and grow

VENTILATOR - A machine that can puts air into the lungs to aid breathing

Fire Alarm

Fire alarm went of this morning about 11am... at one statge thought we had to evacuate the building but found out someones Whopper had been over done in Burger King on level below...

Luke had ok night having a mild Bradycardic episode at about 4:30am where his hear rate went down to about 80bpm. Was ok and recovered well.

Morphine & Chlonodine now at 1.4mls/0.6mls respectively.

Changed Stoma bag and nappy, and L is now having a doze..

Death Episodes

Discovered the correct terminology for when Luke has one of his nasty turns (normally as a result of him getting annoyed) where he goes mottled, sweaty, heart rate drops, saturation drops, blood pressure drops and needs to be bagged and possibly given adrenaline to get heart going more - a [Death Episode].

Lukes had about 10+ of these so far, it is a very distressing thing to see as a parent.

Monster Baby!

L was weighed yesterday and came in at 8.1kg. A normal 4month old baby should be 7.1kg. This puts Luke in the 92 percentile, so I think we need some Slimfast TPN quick!

Luke weighs 8.1kg @ 4months

Generally L had an ok night, woke up a few times being grumpy. Had some piriton to stop scratching face which morphine induces.

Sill on 0.7mls of Clonidine & 1.5mls of Morphine

L had 4nurses singing to him earlier to get him to go to sleep whilst changing his arterial line!

Friends Of PICU

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Southampton General Hospital is the regional centre for the South of England. It is a purpose built unit which presently is open to 10 beds with an 11th bed due to open shortly however it has the ability to expand to 14 beds in the future.

To run such a service and maintain high standards of care, which is paramount in the care of seriously ill Children, requires frequent up dating.

Therefore we are looking for help to maintain and purchase new life saving equipment .
